The German town of Ansbach is a typical Bavarian town that grew up around a Byzantine monastery. As with many towns in this area of Germany Ansbach has a checkered past, with control of the town constantly changing hands over the years. Ansbach was the home of the famous astronomer Simon Marius and also Queen Caroline, the consort of King George II. Legend tells that he grew up in a darkened cell and there are bronze statues to him all around the town.
