The German town of Ansbach is a typical Bavarian town that grew up around a Byzantine monastery. As with many towns in this area of Germany Ansbach has a checkered past, with control of the town constantly changing hands over the years. Ansbach was the home of the famous astronomer Simon Marius and also Queen Caroline, the consort of King George II. Dominated by a typical Bavarian castle the town is famous for its Rococo architecture that attracts many visitors to the town year after year. With a good selection of Ansbach hotels to chose from there is no shortage of comfortable and welcoming places to stay.
There are plenty of sites of interest in Ansbach including Margraves Palace, which is one of the most important 18th Century palaces in the region. It houses a collection of Ansbach porcelain and art and is popular with visitors. Part of the old town of Ansbach is given over purely to pedestrians and the narrow streets are lined with half-timbered houses. With plenty of street cafes for walkers to relax in there are several specialist shops in the area selling traditional foods and crafts from this part of Germany. For those who prefer more modern shopping, there is also a modern shopping center containing sixty stores. Ansbach has plenty of parking so that is never a problem for the shopper or day visitor.
The Markengrafengruft is one of the slightly more macabre visitor attractions in the town, but it is still very popular; this crypt is situated below the streets of Ansbach and opposite the Margrave residence and is the final resting place of some of the town's most illustrious members. A custodian is always on hand to tell the tales of the inmates although the view of the caskets and coffins will not be one that appeals to all. A short walk from the modern shopping center of Brueken is a section of the Berlin Wall, placed on display surrounded by gardens. Everywhere the visitor goes in Ansbach they will be confronted with the name of Kasper Hauser who is one of the most enigmatic characters in German history. Legend tells that he grew up in a darkened cell and there are bronze statues to him all around the town.
The selection of Ansbach hotels ranges from five star rated properties to small family run bed and breakfast style options. One of the most spectacular options is to be found in an imposing castle in the medieval town of Colmberg. Sitting on a ridge above the town the castle dates back over a thousand years but the interior has been transformed to offer guests modern rooms with all the amenities necessary for a comfortable stay. The hotel is set in the middle of the Frankanhohe nature reserve and is popular with those who like hiking in the hills of Germany. The castle also has its own chapel and shrine and offers guests internet access in the rooms.
In Ansbach itself, a typical Bavarian style house welcomes guests into its comfortable surroundings; this hotel offers an express check in service and also welcomes pets. Wi-Fi internet access is available but only in specific rooms so this should be made as a request when booking.
This area of Germany is renowned for its love of fine food and beer and one hotel in the nearby town of Neuendettelsau prides itself on serving traditional Bavarian food. Only a thirty-minute drive from Nuremburg this hotel is in a country style.
